For our family, no place compares to Rossnowlagh Surf School in County Donegal, a truly special surf school along Ireland’s stunning Wild Atlantic Way. I’m Louise Grieve Doherty, and I’m so proud to share our story with you.
Rossnowlagh Surf School is where my son Adam found joy, connection, and confidence through surfing. It’s one of the top-rated places for surfing in Donegal and has made a lasting impact on our lives.
After the challenges of lockdown, Adam took part in a programme with the Donegal Sports Partnership that introduced children with autism to new experiences, helping them to connect socially. One of those was a surf lesson with James Garvey, the owner of Rossnowlagh Surf School. From that very first session, Adam was hooked. He didn’t want to leave, and honestly, we’ve never looked back.
The school was set up in 2014 by James Garvey, who has been surfing here since he was four years old. What started as a few friends doing what they loved has grown into something truly incredible. Ten years on, it’s voted top surf school in Europe, recognised as one of the best surf schools in Ireland, with 5-star reviews and award-winning surf camps. But for me, the magic of Rossnowlagh Surf School isn’t just in the waves, it’s in the people.
As a parent of a child with special needs, you constantly carry concerns. Will they be accepted? Will they feel safe? Will they be left behind? But from day one, the team at Rossnowlagh Surf School put those fears to rest. Some days, Adam and James surfed endlessly. Other days, they just sat in the sand. And that was okay. It was always about inclusion, patience, and kindness.
For the first two summers, Adam had private sessions with James. Then last year, he began group lessons every Sunday at 11 am - learning from different instructors, adapting to new personalities and teaching styles. That was a gift in itself.

Now 15, Adam is back again this year, riding the waves with James and Erin. And the smile on his face says it all.
Rossnowlagh Surf School offers surf lessons in Donegal for all ages and levels, from the fun 'Aloha' beginner classes to the more advanced course. They also offer stand-up paddleboarding and kayak adventures from their base in Bundoran, making it a must-visit for anyone seeking autism-friendly activities in Ireland or inclusive, outdoor fun for the whole family.

Knowing your child is understood, supported, and genuinely cared for is the greatest peace of mind a parent can have. And that’s what we’ve found at Rossnowlagh Surf School.
If you're considering surfing in County Donegal or searching for a welcoming, inclusive experience for your child, I can’t recommend Rossnowlagh Surf School enough.
