Meet Bernie O'Neill: The 92-Year-Old Woman Who Reminds Us What Really Matters!

There are women who don’t make a fuss about themselves, but you never forget them once you meet them. Bernie O’Neill is one of those women.

At 92 years old, Bernie attended The Big Day Out,. She arrived wearing the most stunning bright orange suit and immediately caught my attention. When I asked her where it was from, she didn’t even hesitate. "McElhinneys," she said proudly. Little did I know that meeting Bernie would become one of my favourite moments from the day.

The Woman Behind the Santa Sack

I had actually seen Bernie online before I met her in person. She was sitting quietly at a sewing machine in Bejewelled at Soul in Strabane, carefully sewing together a Santa sack for Digg Deep for Kids. Who was this amazing woman with kindness in her eyes and gentle hands, working away to help others without expecting anything in return?

The Santa sack was going to sit in Bejewelled and be filled by the people of Strabane with gifts and donations for families experiencing poverty. And there was Bernie, taking her time and making sure every stitch was right. Her daughters, Tracy and Ursula, who run Bejewelled at Soul, shared the story online. You could see the pride they had in their mummy. They wanted to celebrate her, and rightly so.

After seeing that post, I knew I wanted to meet her.

A Home Bird Who Said Yes

When Bernie arrived at The Big Day Out, I went straight over to thank her for coming.

We chatted for a while and she told me she had loved every minute of the event. The fashion, the music, the atmosphere, and most importantly, spending time with her daughter and daughter in law. I asked her: "Do you like coming to things like this, Bernie?"

I loved her answer - "To be honest, I am a home bird, but now that I am out I have had a fantastic day with my daughter and daughter-in-law. It was just brilliant. I am glad I came."

And I thought, isn't that like so many of us. We often put off those days out because we are content but then when we go we are glad we did.

Bernie is a woman who knows exactly where she is happiest, but still says yes when the opportunity comes along to make memories with the people she loves.

The Heart of a Family

When I spoke to Tracy and Ursula about their mum, it became clear very quickly that Bernie is the heart of their family. They spoke about her strength and resilience throughout her life.

At one point, she was carrying water from a well while raising her first baby in rural Tyrone. She never complained and simply got on with what needed to be done.

They said she taught them everything. To work hard. To be kind. To have manners. To keep life simple. Good food. Good people. A warm house. That is what matters most.

Apparently, she still makes the best scones you will ever taste. The kind that disappear as soon as the kettle boils. I would love to sit and have a scone and a cuppa with Bernie some day and hear all about her life. I would say she could teach us all a thing or two.

Never Give Up

The saying Bernie has lived by throughout her life is simple: "Never give up. If you fall, you get back up again. You don’t lie there."

.

Why Stories Like Bernie's Matter

Before Bernie left The Big Day Out, I gave her and Tracy two beautiful mugs which were gifted by Belleek Living for some of the special women attending the event. They were perfect for her.

Bernie is like so many of us - enjoys getting out and making memories but home is still where she is happiest. A cup of tea, good company and a warm house. In a world that often feels fast, noisy, and focused on being seen, Bernie reminded me of something so important. The people who make the biggest impact are not always the loudest. Sometimes they are the people quietly sewing a Santa sack for someone they may never meet. Sometimes they are the mothers and grandmothers, fathers and grandfathers who pass down their values to us through their quiet ways. Sometimes they are the people who show up for their family and community every single day without asking for recognition.

A Digg Community Woman

I believe that every community has people like Bernie.

The people who quietly make things better and inspire others without even realising it. The people whose stories deserve to be told. Bernie O’Neill is one of those people.

We can all learn so much from her. Bernie, if you ever read this, I want you to know - you are some woman for one woman.

All my love
