If you’ve ever wondered how to make a healthier bolognese without changing the flavour, here’s my favourite little trick, add Cold Milled Flaxseed. It blends into the sauce so well that nobody notices, yet it adds a boost of omega-3, magnesium and fibre.

It’s one of the easiest ways to sneak extra nutrition into a family meal, and it works beautifully in a classic bolognese.

Ingredients:

  • 500g beef mince

  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • 1 large onion, chopped

  • 1 chopped chilli

  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped

  • 2 sticks celery, chopped

  • 1 red pepper, chopped

  • 1 yellow pepper, chopped

  • 2 tbsp tomato purée

  • 1 jar passata

  • 1 tbsp chilli pesto

  • Smoked paprika (to taste)

  • Oregano (to taste)

  • 2 tbsp Linwoods Cold Milled Flaxseed

Bolognese with Flaxseed Method:

  1. Heat olive oil in a pan and sauté the onion for 5 minutes until soft.

  2. Add the chopped chilli and garlic and cook for 1 minute.

  3. Stir in the celery and peppers, then sprinkle with smoked paprika. Fry for another minute.

  4. Add the beef mince and cook until browned. Season with salt and pepper.

  5. Add the tomato purée, passata and chilli pesto. Simmer for about 20 minutes.

  6. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the Cold Milled Flaxseed — this helps keep all the nutritional value.

Serve with spaghetti and finish with a sprinkle of Parmesan. It's simple, delicious, and such an easy way to make your bolognese more nutritious.
