Easy Homemade Chicken Goujons for a Busy Family Dinner

I’m always looking for easy dinners that everyone in the house will actually eat and that don’t require me standing in the kitchen for hours. You know I like a handy dinner! These easy homemade chicken goujons are exactly that. A few simple ingredients, a breadcrumb coating with my wee Parmesan tip, and into the oven they go. I love making them myself because I know exactly what has gone into them.
There’s nothing complicated about this recipe. The coating takes a little bit of preparation, but once they’re in the oven, you can get on with sorting whatever you’re serving alongside them. Of course, there has to be something for dunking. We all know the ketchup can sometimes be as important as the dinner in a house with kids!
Homemade Chicken Goujons Recipe
Cooking time: Approximately 20 minutes.
Oven temperature: 200°C fan
Ingredients
3 large chicken fillets
100g plain flour
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1 teaspoon garlic granules
3 eggs, beaten
Breadcrumbs, enough to coat the chicken
Grated Parmesan, to mix through the breadcrumbs
Mama Bear Ketchup, for dunking
Method
1. Prepare the chicken
Preheat your fan oven to 200°C. Cut the chicken fillets into goujon-sized strips, keeping them roughly the same size.
2. Make the seasoned flour
Add the plain flour to a bowl with the salt, black pepper, smoked paprika and garlic granules. Give everything a good mix.
3. Get your coating bowls ready
Beat the eggs in a separate bowl, then put the breadcrumbs into a third bowl.
Here’s my wee sneaky tip: mix some grated Parmesan through the breadcrumbs. It’s such a simple addition, but it adds lovely flavour to the coating. So good!
4. Coat the chicken goujons
This is the order I use:
Egg → Flour → Egg → Breadcrumbs
Dip each chicken strip into the beaten egg, then the seasoned flour. Dip it back into the egg before coating it in the Parmesan breadcrumbs.
5. Bake in the oven
Arrange the goujons in a single layer on a baking tray, leaving a little space between them.
Cook for approximately 20 minutes, turning halfway through, until golden and completely cooked through. The cooking time will depend on the thickness of your chicken strips. To check, use a clean food thermometer: the centre of the chicken should reach 75°C for at least 30 seconds.
6. Serve and get dunking
Serve with whatever works in your house and a good dollop of Mama Bear Ketchup on the side.
What to Serve with Homemade Chicken Goujons
You don’t need to make the sides complicated either. Oven chips or potato wedges, some peas or sweetcorn, or a simple salad would all work well.
You could also serve the goujons in wraps with lettuce and your favourite toppings for a different way to put dinner on the table.
For me, the whole point of a handy family dinner is making something everyone enjoys without giving yourself lots of extra work.
The Ketchup Is an Important Part!

If your children are anything like mine, ketchup is practically another food group. There could be a lovely dinner sitting in front of them, but the first question will still be, “Where’s the ketchup?” We love Mama Bear Foods. Their reduced-sugar tomato ketchup is made in Ireland with all-natural ingredients and uses chicory root syrup for sweetness. There’s also a Hidden Veggies Ketchup in the range, which includes carrot, celery and beetroot.
You’ll find Mama Bear in Tesco, Dunnes Stores and SuperValu. Availability can vary by store.
The kids get something they love to dunk their dinner into, and I get that wee bit of peace of mind about what’s in it.
Save this homemade chicken goujon recipe for the next time you’re stuck wondering what to make for dinner. It’s nothing fancy, just an easy family dinner they’ll actually eat.
